While mobile service providers were following Tata-DoCoMo in 1 paisa per second tariff, latest entrant Videocon has pulled one over the rest in the tariff game.

Videocon Mobile Services on Tuesday announced that one paisa per second billing for ISD calls, making them at par with the local calls.

The company introduced a one-paisa-per-second calling voucher for US and Canada priced at Rs 57 with 30 days validity. In another scheme, customers can make calls to Singapore and Malaysia for Rs 1.69 per minute; and to the US and Canada for 99 paisa / minute with a Rs 22 calling voucher.

The handset enables QVGA Video playing and recording and supports 5.1ch Mobile Theater, MPEG4, H.263 and H.264. Entertainment buffs can enjoy music player with SoundAlive, music recognition, music recommendation, FM Radio or recording via the 3.5mm ear jack.

Apart from this, the device is also incorporated with Bluetooth technology v3.0 (EDR), USB v2.0 support and 90MB internal memory which is expandable up to 16GB via the microSD card slot. The Samsung Wave 723 is anticipated to be available beginning September in Germany and later to other European markets such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia and Africa. Pricing details of the phone though are not yet known.

Facebook has unveiled new features to the site, which are designed to make the tagging of photos easier.

Speaking about the new face-recognition tech in a blog, Sam Odio from Facebook says about the updates: “People love tagging their friends and family in photos, but we’ve heard that it can be a tedious process.

“You now can add tags with just a couple of clicks directly from your home page and other sections of the site, using the same face detection technology that cameras have used for years.”

Essentially this means that you don’t have to manually add an image box to faces to tag them, as Facebook will now automatically ‘see’ the faces.

Those who are worries that they are automatically going to get tagged smoking and boozing at the work’s party, don’t be, it will recognise your face as an, er, face but you still have to manually add a name to the mug.

Odio knows a lot about this sort of tech as until a few months ago he was part of Divvyshot – a photo-sharing service which was snapped up by Facebook.

The company was bought to make Facebook’s photo service better, so the addition of better tagging should be the first in a long line of tweaks.
